Environmental Policy Statement

Case Study
|
September 23rd, 2025

Masons NZ Ltd is a New Zealand-owned supplier of globally sourced building materials for the construction industry. We recognise that how we source, package, and distribute products affects our environment and the communities we serve.

Our goal is to minimise negative impacts and contribute to a built environment that is safe, durable, and environmentally responsible.

Our Commitment

In November 2024, following a significant consumer insights project that highlighted the importance of sustainability and environmental impact to our customers, we established a Masons cross-functional Sustainability Team.

This team integrated environmental thinking into our company strategy, product development, and day-to-day decisions, and collaborates with the Environmental Innovation Centre (EIC) in Auckland to reduce waste, enhance recycling, and explore new opportunities for circular material use. Environmental Management

We operate an internal environmental management process that includes:

Waste Reduction and Recycling:

  • Soft plastics from product packaging are collected and recycled through PACT Group, Auckland into Masons DryFix DPC. Read more: Giving Plastic a Second Life: The Masons DryFix DPC Story

  • 13 tonnes of waste plastic diverted from landfill and reused in Marley pipes. Read more: Turning Waste into Worth: Masons commitment to Circular Construction.

  • Timber off-cuts (80kg/2 weeks) repurposed for schools and community projects.

  • Cardboard, plastic bottles, coffee pods, and wastepaper fully recycled.

  • Warehouse general waste bins reduced from 4.5 m to 1.5 m capacity, reflecting reduced landfill needs.

  • Wooden crates from suppliers for shipments are repurposed in the community.

  • Our Waste Management Plan will be published on our website on 31st Nov 2025.

Resource efficiency:

  • One forklift converted to electric power; further electrification planned.

  • Trialling low-impact pallet wraps and alternative tape backing papers.

  • Trialling 100 % recycled Dri-Fit polyester uniforms to staff and recycled-cotton merchandise to customers.

Product stewardship:

  • EIC is preparing customer guidance on responsible end-of-life disposal of Masons products. Publication date 31st November 2025.

  • We favour packaging and design choices that enable recycling and reuse.

These initiatives are measured and reported internally to track progress and shape new targets.

Sustainability in Corporate Strategy

Environmental sustainability is a standing factor in all major decisions.
When evaluating new products, packaging, or warehouse investments, we consider:

  • embodied carbon and lifecycle impacts, EC information is being collated on Masons wrap and tapes and will be made available to specifiers upon request.

  • transport and energy requirements, and

  • opportunities to reduce or recover materials.

Budgeting and planning cycles include sustainability metrics alongside financial and customer goals.

Social Responsibility and Human Rights

Masons requires that all manufacturing and supply partners meet New Zealand employment standards and international human rights conventions. We expect:

  • safe and fair working conditions,

  • non-discriminatory practices, and

  • compliance with all relevant labour and environmental laws.

Supplier agreements and periodic reviews reinforce these expectations.

Continuous Improvement

We see our environmental performance as an ongoing process. Our Sustainability Team:

  • continually strives for better waste, energy, and materials use,

  • monitors the progress of initiatives across Auckland and Christchurch warehouses, and reports to senior leadership for review.

New opportunities such as electric fleet expansion, advanced recycling streams, and lower-impact product formulations are piloted and scaled where effective.

Accountability and Communication
  • This policy is endorsed by the Senior Leadership Team

  • It will be continuously reviewed and updated as new technologies, regulations, and customer expectations emerge.
