Case Study

When Ash Elley, Director of Dunedin Roofing Systems, travelled to Wellington to help build a new garage at his parents’ property, the project became an opportunity to get back on the tools and trial Masons VHP Value Roof Underlay.

With more than 20 years in the roofing industry, Ash has worked across nearly every role in the trade – from apprentice and installer, to project manager and quantity surveyor – before becoming director of Dunedin Roofing Systems. Today, the company delivers projects ranging from small residential work through to large commercial buildings across Dunedin and Queenstown.

The Wellington project involved installing roofing on a new 77m² mono-pitch garage. With a return flight already booked and rain arriving on installation day, Ash had a limited window to get the job completed. “I had one day dedicated to getting the roof done,” he says. “It was raining while I was up there, so I was pretty keen to get it finished.”

For the project, Ash installed Masons VHP Value Roof Underlay beneath the steel roofing. While he had heard of Mason’s products within the industry, this was his first time using a Mason’s roof underlay. The product impressed with its durability and ease of handling on-site.

“The material was stronger than I expected,” said Ash. “At one point during the install, a full roll slipped from the roof and hit the ground. The underlay remained intact, which would not have been the case with other lighter synthetic products I’ve used in the past.”

Masons VHP Value Roof Underlay is a synthetic, vapour-permeable underlay designed to allow moisture vapour to escape from the roof space while protecting against wind-driven rain during construction. Suitable for use under a range of roofing materials, it offers reliable temporary weather protection with UV resistance for up to 21 days. The lightweight design makes it easy to handle and install on site, while still delivering the strength and durability required for residential roofing applications.

The 100m² roll also provided efficient coverage for the straightforward garage roof, allowing the underlay to be installed quickly before the steel cladding was fixed in place. Following the project, Ash says the product performed really well and is something he would consider using again. “It was strong, easy to handle, and did what we needed it to do.”
