Masons Warehouse Waste Diversion

Case Study
|
November 3rd, 2025

At Masons, we’re looking to use resources more efficiently and move towards a more circular model. We recognise that waste is a major challenge in the building industry (69% of landfilled waste comes from construction and demolition!), and we are committed to playing our part in reducing it.

Through our partnership with the Environmental Innovation Centre (EIC), we’re now preventing more than 12m³ of waste from our Auckland warehouse reaching landfill each month, and we’re continually exploring new ways to reduce waste even further.

Our warehouse team is currently focusing on reducing packaging waste. For over 6 years now, our soft plastic waste is recycled by a local recycling company into our Dry Fix DPC product. Why would we throw away clear, clean, high-quality plastic?

Our warehouse also gets plywood slats with incoming products from overseas. These sit between our products to protect them. While they are untreated wood, it’s not recommended to burn them in home fireplaces due to the adhesives present. Reverse logistics (to return them to the supplier) also aren’t possible. Ideally, we’d replace them with solid timber (which can be burned as firewood or biofuel), but this option is currently too costly for a packaging product. Our next goal is to replace the plywood slats with a more readily recyclable product – we are trialling a paper-based product that can be recycled. This will help to avoid sending waste to landfill, and getting another life out of it.

In the meantime, we’re looking to reuse through the community. If you are interested in taking these, and giving them a second life, we’d love to hear from you. They have already gone to the community for refurbishing the interior of a caravan and a workshed.

We also have large, sturdy timber crates available, perfect for DIY projects. Get in touch with us if you’re interested in reusing these materials and helping us to reduce waste.
