Dunedin Reroof Tackles Coastal Conditions with VHP Value Roof Underlay

When Dunedin Roofing Systems took on a 190m² residential reroof in one of the city’s most exposed coastal suburbs, reliable weather protection was critical. Located in what locals call “Windy Waverley,” the property sits high above the harbour and is regularly hit by strong winds from multiple directions, a typical challenge for roofing projects in the lower South Island.

Project Manager Ben Fraser, who has more than 20 years’ experience in the roofing industry, oversaw the job. Although his team works across both residential and large commercial projects, this was their first time using Masons VHP Value Roof Underlay.

“This one’s pretty exposed, you’ll get a good wind most days,” Ben explains. “So having an underlay you can trust while the roof’s open is important.”

The project did present an early complication. When the old roof was removed, the team discovered insulation had been installed hard against the underside of the roof, leaving no ventilation gap. This was removed before the new underlay went down to ensure the roof build-up met code and could manage moisture correctly.

Installation of the VHP Value underlay itself went smoothly. The experienced roofer on the job described it as “nice and strong,” with handling comparable to other synthetic underlays the team regularly uses. The larger roll coverage was a noticeable advantage.

“He got the paper down quicker, not having to keep changing rolls,” says Ben. “Those first couple of rolls covered most of the roof, and there was less messing around and less waste.”

Having seen condensation issues with some products in the past, Ben was initially cautious about trying a new underlay. However, confidence in product testing and performance gave him assurance. Following this project, he says he would use Masons VHP Value Roof Underlay again.

“It did what we needed it to do. Strong, straightforward to install, and good coverage.”
