Ashburton College’s Building & Construction Academy puts Year 13 students on a real build site, working with real tradespeople and earning recognised BCITO credits. With support from industry suppliers, including Masons, students gain practical construction experience while building two real homes for their community.
Building a trade pipeline from the ground up
Principal Simon Coleman had a vision: to give students the best possible pathway into the Building and Construction industry by completing a real house build. Under the supervision of Licenced Building practitioner Peter Taylor, students would learn alongside qualified tradespeople, including in carpentry, plumbing, wiring and roofing, and come away with something more than theory.

How Masons got involved
Sourcing materials for the builds involved a mix of donations and what Peter calls ‘sharp, one-off deals’. Masons came on board through Representative Chris Brown, supplying UNI PLUS Flexible Air Barrier, 40 Below Flex Flashing Tape, Penetration Seals and VHP Roof Underlay – products the students install themselves under expert guidance.
‘I’d known Chris for years,’ says Andrea, the Master Builders contact who helped drive the programme from the start. ‘He called in, I told him what we were doing, and he said, “We’ll be involved.” That’s how most of our 26 sponsors came on board. Industry relationships, one conversation at a time.’
Installation Disclaimer
The images in this case study show UNI PLUS installed using staples rather than UNI fasteners. Using staples alters the intended application, and the product functions as a standard house wrap. For UNI PLUS Flexible Air Barrier system compliance and performance, UNI fasteners are required.
