UNI PLUS Flexible Air Barrier offers thicker, stronger protection

Case Study
|
July 3rd, 2024

After hearing from site managers about the benefits of using UNI PLUS on multi-unit developments, Adam Bray decided to install it on his own new house.

‘With local builders reporting good results with the UNI system, I was happy to try it on our building project,’ says Adam Bray, account manager for Mitre 10 in Tauranga. ‘The combination of a good price and a good reputation for the product pretty much sold me.’

His 325sqm Tauranga house is being built by DRS Build, with owner Dayne Stimpson working with UNI PLUS for the first time. ‘Usually, we use whatever kind of building paper is specified in the plans,’ he says. ‘But in this case, our client was keen for us to use it. UNI is heavier than standard paper, and so it rolls out really well and is easier to handle during the install.’

Thicker and stronger for better protection

Thicker and stronger than standard building paper, UNI PLUS Flexible Air Barrier is a 180gsm synthetic wall underlay designed to provide protection from the weather. Installed to manufacturers instructions, using Masons fixings and flashing tape, it offers weather and UV protection of up to 90 days. Once installed, it allows interior work to continue, without waiting for the cladding to be completed. Builders can compress time frames, getting more work done in the same period, making projects faster and more profitable.

Installation is quick and easy, with many resources to help first-time users. ‘It’s easy to roll out and keep straight, especially on a windy day,’ says Dayne. ‘Because it’s thicker, you have to work a bit harder to get it nice and tight in the corners, but once it’s on it covers the framing nicely.’

Keeping interiors moisture-free

‘On single unit builds, I like to complete the exterior first,’ says Dayne. ‘On multi-unit builds, the option of carrying on site while the cladding is going on is a great proposition.  The other advantage of UNI is its weather defence, so when you get a bit of rain it won’t penetrate through the paper, keeping the interior nice and dry.’

Once installed, UNI PLUS provides a secondary line of defence against moisture over the life of the building. With its breathable construction, it passes water vapour from the inside of the building out to keep interiors drier and warmer.

Peace of mind through guaranteed performance

Both during and after the build, UNI PLUS offers the reassurance of a thicker, stronger building wrap that is Codemark certified and guaranteed to perform.

‘I guess the good thing about the UNI System is peace of mind,’ says Adam. ‘We're not going to have a cladding supply issue, but it’s nice to know that if we did, there’d be plenty for Dayne to do inside. If we were using an inferior product, which wouldn't be able to withstand UV and rain, then something as basic as weather could hold up the whole project. With UNI PLUS, that’s not going to happen.’
